Our day began early, departing from Gregory Hills at 6:30 AM, filled with anticipation for the adventure ahead. Our destination was the renowned Palm Jungle Loop Track in the Royal National Park, a trail celebrated for its diverse landscapes and breathtaking views.

Getting There

From Gregory Hills to the Royal National Park its approximately 1 hour drive early in the morning. Navigating through the morning calm, we arrived at the Garawarra Farm carpark, the starting point for our hike. The carpark offers ample space and is the gateway to several trails within the park.

Walking to the Figure 8 Pools

Embarking on the Palm Jungle Loop Track, we were immediately immersed in a rich tapestry of environments. The trail is a 10 km loop (we did extra 4kms on top of that), typically requiring 4 to 6 hours to complete. It's graded as a Level 4 (Hard) track, indicating a challenging route suitable for experienced bushwalkers.

Our journey descending towards Werrong Lookout, the forest gave way to coastal heath, offering expansive views of the ocean. The lookout provided a perfect vantage point to rest and absorb the natural beauty before us. (Youtube link - )

The trail then led us into the heart of the Palm Jungle, a dense rainforest adorned with lush cabbage tree palms and intricate vines. Walking through this section felt like stepping into another world, with the canopy filtering sunlight and creating a tranquil atmosphere.

Continuing, we reached Burning Palms Beach, a pristine stretch of sand bordered by historic beach shacks. Here, we took a well-deserved break, enjoying the serene ambiance and the rhythmic sounds of the waves. For those considering a swim, it's essential to note that the beach is unpatrolled, and conditions can be unpredictable.

From Burning Palms Beach, we took a detour south towards the famous Figure 8 Pools a natural rock formation nestled along the ocean's edge in the Royal National Park. The walk from the beach to the pools was about 20–30 minutes, weaving across rock platforms and coastal outcrops. It required careful footing, especially as we approached the more rugged and slippery sections near the shoreline.

Reaching the Figure 8 Pools felt like arriving at a hidden gem. The tide was low, which is essential for visiting safely and the pools revealed themselves in full glory, carved perfectly into the rock like nature’s infinity spas. The water inside was crystal clear, allowing us to see tiny marine life fluttering beneath the surface.

We dipped our feet in, letting the cool water wash away the fatigue of the hike. The contrast between the jagged rock platform and the smooth, mirror-like pools was surreal. Waves crashed a safe distance away, reminding us of nature’s power and precision. (Youtube Link)

Spending time here felt meditative, just us, the ocean, and this remarkable geological wonder. It's a spot that deserves its hype, but also one that must be visited with care and respect for the environment and ocean conditions.

As commenced through towering eucalyptus forests, where the scent of gum leaves filled the air. The path then descended along the steep Burgh Ridge, presenting panoramic views of the rugged coastline—a perfect spot for photography and a moment of reflection.

The final leg of the hike meandered through shaded woodlands, eventually guiding us back to the carpark.

Tips and Recommendations

  • Preparation: Equip yourself with sturdy hiking boots, sufficient water, and sun protection. The trail encompasses various terrains, from sandy beaches to rocky paths.
  • Weather Awareness: Check the weather forecast and park alerts before setting out, as conditions can change rapidly.
  • Wildlife: The park is home to diverse fauna. We were fortunate to spot a swamp wallaby amidst the undergrowth—a delightful highlight of our hike.
  • Safety: Mobile reception is limited within the park. Inform someone of your plans and expected return time.
