There’s something about spending a day immersed in nature that rejuvenates both body and mind. Recently, I had the chance to experience one of Royal National Park’s hidden gems – the Curra Moors Loop Track. It was the perfect blend of adventure, scenic beauty, and a touch of wildlife, all wrapped up in a day of hiking.

The Day Begins at Royal National Park Visitor Centre

Before hitting the trail, we made a quick stop at the Royal National Park Visitor Centre to fuel up. A warm cup of coffee and a hearty breakfast was just what we needed to kickstart our day. The café’s relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff made it the perfect spot to prepare for the hike ahead.

Setting Off on Curra Moors Loop Track

With refreshed energy, we hopped back in the car and drove around14 kilometres (About 15 minutes’ drive from the visitor centre) to the Curra Moors Loop Track’s entry point. The drive itself was picturesque, but nothing could have prepared us for the beauty that awaited us on the trail.

As soon as we started walking, the landscape unfolded into a stunning display of wildflowers in full bloom. It was as if the entire area had come alive, with vibrant colors and subtle fragrances adding to the serene atmosphere. The track, while moderately challenging, offered breathtaking views throughout, making every step worth it.

A Close Encounter with Nature

The highlight of our hike came when we were approaching Curracurrong waterfall. As we walked through the peaceful bushland, we spotted a massive carpet python lounging on a tree branch, basking in the sun. It was one of those rare moments when you feel entirely connected to nature – a reminder of the diverse wildlife that calls this park home.

Crossing Curracurrong Creek

After the exciting wildlife sighting, we made our way to Curracurrong Creek. The creek crossing was a peaceful experience, with the sound of water flowing gently by. After taking a moment to enjoy the scenery, we looped back around to complete the track, finishing our adventure on a high note.

Final Thoughts

Curra Moors Loop Track is a must-do for anyone visiting Royal National Park. Whether you’re looking for a tranquil hike surrounded by wildflowers, or hoping to spot some local wildlife, this trail offers it all. With its natural beauty and well-maintained paths, it’s an ideal choice for both seasoned hikers and those looking for a refreshing escape from the city.

If you’re planning a trip to Royal National Park, be sure to add Curra Moors Loop to your itinerary – and don’t forget to stop at the Visitor Centre for coffee and brekkie before you begin!

~Tips

Parking - Parking is available at the entry point.

Footwear - The trail is relatively easy, but sturdy hiking shoes are recommended to ensure comfort and safety on uneven surfaces (can be very slippery at places due to loose rocks). Use gaiters in spring/summer (in case of snake or other creepy crawlers).

Weather - Check the weather forecast before heading out.

Essentials - Carry plenty of water, sunscreen, anti-bug spray and a hat. Although the hike isn’t excessively long, staying hydrated and protected from the sun is crucial.

Respect Nature- As with any natural reserve, follow the Leave No Trace principles. Stay on marked paths, respect wildlife, and take your rubbish with you.
