10/06/2024 – Cliff Top Track and Grand Canyon, Blue Mountains, NSW
(17.2km Loop - Grade 4, Hard)
Waterfalls,
ferns, and breathtaking views define the Grand Canyon Track, one of the most
popular walks in the Blue Mountains National Park. This challenging hike takes
you through lush vegetation along a series of ledges in this World
Heritage-listed landscape.
Parked
our car in Blue Mountains Heritage centre car park around 9.30 in the morning (its
better if you could start early). We began our walk on the Fairfax Heritage Track (1)
at 10:00 AM and reached George Phillips Lookout after a relaxed 30-minute
stroll, enjoying the scenic views of the Blue Mountains. From here we reached Govetts Leap Look out (2).
This lookout offers parking, a picnic area, and toilets, and it also serves as
a starting point for the Cliff Top and Grand Canyon walks.
After a 5-minute walk, we arrived at the stepping stone bridge(3), where the Cliff Top Track intersects on the left and the Braeside Walk on the right. We started Cliff Top Track and this wonderfully scenic walk, following the cliff edge hikers are treated to spectacular views extending across the Grose Valley and the cliff-lined mountain scape of the Blue Mountains. Stone walks, dropping down from the cliff tops we entered the wonderland of the Grand Canyon, a lush track between tall sandstone cliffs with an abundance of waterfalls and creeks to view along the way. We took several breaks near Barrow lookout and Evans lookout, although we skipped Luchetti Lookout and Valley View lookout due to time constraints.
Returning to Heritage
Centre Car Park - Exiting
the Grand Canyon is a steep track through Neates Glen until finally we finally
reached Neates Glen Parking area(4). From there, we
followed Evans lookout road and, after walking 600 meters, turned right onto
Braeside Walk to return to the car park (via Govetts Leap Lookout and Fairfax
Heritage Track) at the Heritage Centre.
Last but not least
The Grand Canyon Track features stunning viewpoints that showcase the impressive terrain and cliffs of the Grose Valley. This historic loop track dives deep into the towering sandstone walls that have been carved over millions of years by the flow of Greaves Creek. It offers an intimate, adventurous experience in the heart of this World Heritage-listed landscape, a path well-trodden by walkers since 1907. Along the walk, you'll encounter diverse environments and countless opportunities for photography, with viewpoints and waterfalls aplenty. Walkers should allow extra time for lunch, snacks, and all the photo stops.
